The Sixers Finish March With a 3-14 Record, as They've Officially Been Eliminated From Playoff Contention

Image
Corey Chmara To put it lightly, the Sixers are eagerly waiting for this season to come to an end, sitting at an abysmal 23-52 record. Really, the only thing keeping Sixers fans optimistic is the possibility of landing a top-six pick in the 2025 NBA Draft— if the pick lands in the top six. Regardless, there are just seven games left in the season, with only two weeks remaining. Mitchell Leff/Getty Images Philly is currently riding an eight-game losing streak, which was at just four at the start of the week. On Monday, they took on the New Orleans Pelicans, who were legitimately without everyone—no Zion Williamson, CJ McCollum, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy III, and of course, Dejounte Murray. The Sixers were without Quentin Grimes, who was listed as out due to “rest.” It was a pretty rough game to play in and watch, as the Sixers fell 112-99, despite solid efforts from Jared Butler and Justin Edwards, who both scored 19 points. After a grueling six-game road trip, the Sixers finally returned...

Sixers Continue to Lose, With Just 11 Games Remaining on the Season

Image
Corey Chmara This past week was a rough one for the Sixers—at least if you're still hoping for them to win meaningless games. For the tanking crowd, it was a success. The Sixers went winless (0-4) last week, with all games played on the road. The week began in Houston, where the Sixers faced off against the Rockets, currently the second seed in the West. Philly led by as many as 25 points, even into the second half. However, Jabari Smith and Jalen Green each dropped 30 points and were instrumental in the Rockets' second-half comeback. Quentin Grimes had his best game as a Sixer, posting a career-high 46 points along with 13 rebounds. Unfortunately, the Sixers were outscored 45-24 in the third quarter alone and ultimately fell 144-137 in overtime. Tough to see a performance like that from Grimes go to waste, but it’s another loss that helps in the quest to keep their top-six protected pick. Sixers Grab a Win, But Their Lost Season Rolls On at 23-44

Image
Corey Chmara Another week goes by as the Sixers patiently wait for this dreadful season to come to an end. Players such as Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, Eric Gordon, Andre Drummond, Kelly Oubre Jr., Lonnie Walker IV, Adem Bona, and, of course, Jared McCain all missed games this week. Some have already been ruled out for the season, while others will likely remain sidelined as the final 15 games drag on. On Monday, the Sixers faced the Atlanta Hawks in Atlanta. The Hawks were without both Trae Young and Caris LeVert, while the Sixers were missing their "Big 3," along with Drummond, Oubre, and several other key players. The game remained competitive for much of the first half, but the Hawks pulled away in the third quarter, extending their lead to 17 and never looking back. Paras Griffin/Getty Images One of the few bright spots—not just in this game but over the past month—has been the play of Quentin Grimes and Lonnie Walker IV (who is now sidelined with a concussion...

Sixers End 9-Game Skid, But Embiid's Season Comes to a Close

Image
Corey Chmara Joel Embiid’s 2024-25 campaign has officially come to an end, as the Sixers announced on Friday that he has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to being medically unable to play, according to Shams Charania (ESPN). While this news is both disappointing and unfortunate, it was also expected—especially given that the Sixers currently sit at 21-38 and are trying to retain their top-six protected first-round pick. If their pick falls outside the top six, it would be conveyed to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Jesse D. Garrabrant/Getty Images This past week was an unpredictable one for the Sixers, as they played at home against Chicago, on the road in New York, and then back in Philly against Golden State. Their week opened on Monday with a home matchup against the Bulls, who ruled out center Nikola Vučević before the game. The Sixers, already without Joel Embiid and Justin Edwards, looked completely outmatched as the Bulls cruised to a dominant 142-110 victory. This ...

Sixers Hold a 20-36 Record, Currently Retaining Their Top-Six Protected Pick

Corey Chmara The Sixers are just 1-9 in their last 10 games and haven’t looked worse at any point this season. Despite being relatively healthy, a lack of coaching, effort, and heart has been painfully evident—largely explaining their poor record. This past week, the Sixers resumed play after the All-Star break with a home game against the Boston Celtics. They were without Justin Edwards, Eric Gordon, and Kyle Lowry, though that’s hardly an excuse for the disappointing performance they put up. By halftime, the game was essentially over, although the Sixers made a few attempts to claw their way back in the second half. David Dow/Getty Images Against Boston, Embiid, George, and Maxey combined for just 48 points on 16-of-33 shooting. The Sixers allowed Boston to shoot nearly 45% from three (24-for-54) and struggled to find any rhythm offensively. Aside from a few flashes, the overall effort from the team was dismal. The Sixers fell to Boston 124-104 in a game many—including myself—thought...

The Sixers' Lack of Effort Continues to Show as They Sit at 20-32 on the Season

Image
Corey Chmara This past week was yet another disappointing one for the Sixers, as they went 1-3 despite Maxey, George, and Embiid all playing in two of the games. Honestly, I don't even want to dive into each game this week—they were all bad performances, even the meager 118-116 win against the Dallas Mavericks. Nic Antaya/Getty Images The Sixers got Paul George and Joel Embiid back for Friday’s game against the Detroit Pistons, who were without their All-Star, Cade Cunningham. You’d think the Sixers would at least keep it close, if not win the game outright. But that clearly wasn’t the case, as they trailed by as many as 34 points and allowed 78 points in just the first half. It feels like the players believe that simply having big names and former All-Stars on the roster means they can just show up and win. Nick Nurse doesn't prepare these guys to actually compete and put in effort. Instead, he lets them play freelance basketball, which leads to poor shot selection and constan...

Sixers Sit at 10 Games Below .500, with Trade Deadline Approaching

Image
Corey Chmara This upcoming week is a very important one for the Sixers, specifically for two reasons. The first is the February 6th trade deadline, which is fast approaching. As a result, many NBA players will likely be moved—some teams will aim to improve, while others will trade solid role players to contenders. The second reason why this week is crucial for Philly is that everyone is now practicing with the team, meaning we should have a fully healthy squad (excluding McCain) for the first time this season. Last week was actually a pretty solid one for the Sixers, despite their 2-2 record. They faced teams with winning records while missing both Paul George and Joel Embiid. The Sixers opened the week against the Lakers, who were without Anthony Davis for most of the game. This game turned into a one-man show led by Tyrese Maxey, who scored 43 points. But the role players also stepped up: Oubre had 20, Gordon added 14, Yabusele contributed 14, and Ricky Council IV came off the bench ...
